About this activity

What to do

A half‑day nature excursion that combines a bus ride through sugar‑cane plantations with a boat trip on Costa Rica’s longest river. See crocodiles, howler monkeys and more than 300 species of migratory birds up close in one of the last dry tropical forests in Central America.

This experience brings you into the biodiversity of Palo Verde National Park, a wildlife refuge declared in the 1970s. After a comfortable transfer from your hotel in a panoramic bus, you will cross extensive sugar‑cane plantations to reach the region’s most important wetland. There you will board a boat to tour the Tempisque River, accompanied by a naturalist guide who will help you identify birds such as the roseate spoonbill, herons and jabirus, as well as white‑faced capuchins, coatis and American crocodiles. In addition to the boat ride, you’ll learn about conservation projects that protect this fragile ecosystem and the famous “palo verde” tree that gives the park its name. Lasting about three hours without transport, the tour is offered in Spanish, English or French and includes non‑alcoholic drinks and all necessary safety measures.

Navigate the Tempisque River with an expert guide and discover one of Central America’s richest wetlands.
