Puerto Plata Overview

San Felipe de Puerto Plata more commonly known as Puerto Plata is famously known for its beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters which provides for a popular resort town full of activities, pleasure and adventures. The backdrop for this magnificent destination is a 793 meter high mountain that sites within the city which features a replica of Christ the Redeemer.  Being the oldest town on the north coast Puerto Plata is full of history which you can see from the Victorian style architecture and the tell tail signs from centuries of invasions and European influences.  


Getting to this amazing Dominican Republic destination you need to fly into the Puerto Plata International Airport which is around a 15 minute drive east of downtown, it is best to pre book your airport pick-up and drop off before you arrive. Puerto Plata’s history dates back to around 1494 and not until 1496 that the down was built by brothers Christopher and Bartolome Columbus. For hundreds of years the town suffered through wars and battles and was not until 1865 that the current town of Puerto Plata was built based on a victorian architecture and designs.

Surrounding the town you will find some of the most beautiful beaches, reefs and mountainous terrain in all of the world and including some of the most friendliest people. Make sure you leave your hotel to really experience the Dominican hospitality.

Things to do in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is famous and most popular for beach locations Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada and it’s crystal clear waters which are perfect for diving, swimming, kite-boarding and sailing just to name a few. For the adventurous spend a day deep sea fishing, abseiling down the Jarabacoa & Santiago Waterfalls, zip-lining and horseback riding on the beach. You can’t visit this wonderful town and not get to know it’s history and culture go on a safari and city tour to try local foods and experience real Dominican hospitality by joining a local family in their home, visit the colonial fort and amber museum.
